What is Network & Server Monitoring?

Network monitoring services continuously record the state of your servers, switches, routers and internet links and alert the responsible person when something drifts from normal, before the warning signs turn into an outage. They fit companies where users report a down server first, a disk fills up unnoticed, or an existing Zabbix install raises so many false alarms that nobody looks. PikoSystem deploys Zabbix on your own infrastructure, tracks CPU, RAM, disk space, service status and Event Log errors with Zabbix Agent, polls MikroTik routers, switches and firewalls over SNMP, tunes thresholds to each system's normal behavior, and sends alerts by email or SMS. Alert handling follows the terms of the contract. You get a monitoring server with admin access, a status dashboard, and a monthly report on incidents and resource trends.

Zabbix Server with a PostgreSQL or MySQL backend on a dedicated machine, including backups of the monitoring configuration itself.

Switches, MikroTik routers and firewalls polled over SNMP for port traffic, interface errors and link availability.

Thresholds are set from each system's normal behavior so alert noise stays low. Alerts go out by email or SMS.

Network & Server Monitoring: a practical guide

Zabbix or PRTG for network monitoring?

PRTG is commercial software licensed by sensor count, and its core server runs only on Windows. Initial setup is quick and its auto-discovery is good. For Iranian companies, buying and renewing a valid license is difficult because of sanctions.

Zabbix is open source with no licensing limits, runs on Linux and extends to branches and separate networks with Zabbix Proxy. The trade-off is more time spent on templates and thresholds. For multi-branch networks or infrastructure with many monitored items, Zabbix is usually the more practical choice.

Linux server monitoring: items that matter more than CPU

Running out of inodes stops a server from creating files even with free disk space, and default disk checks do not show it. The timeleft function in Zabbix predicts when a disk will fill based on its growth trend, which is more useful than a fixed percentage alert.

Clock drift against NTP breaks Active Directory authentication and certificate validation. Software RAID status from /proc/mdstat, disk health via smartctl, failed systemd units and the time of the last successful backup are not in the default templates and need to be added. Always read load relative to the number of cores.

Server room monitoring: temperature and UPS

A server room air conditioner failing at night or over a weekend can take servers and disks down by morning. Inlet temperature can be read from iLO on HPE servers or iDRAC on Dell over IPMI or Redfish, and a network temperature sensor with SNMP support covers the room itself.

UPS units with a network card are polled over SNMP, and for the rest NUT reads data over USB. An on-battery alert with the remaining runtime gives you time to shut servers down cleanly before the battery runs out.

Too many alerts: dependencies and maintenance windows

When a branch router goes down, every device behind it looks down too and dozens of alerts fire at once. With trigger dependencies in Zabbix, only the router alert goes out and the rest stay quiet until it recovers.

Define maintenance periods for planned work such as updates and reboots so they do not raise false alarms. Route alerts by severity, with Disaster going by SMS to whoever is on call and Warning going only to email and the daily summary. If nobody acknowledges an alert within a set time, escalation passes it to the next person.

Network & Server Monitoring: frequently asked questions

Should we handle the Zabbix setup ourselves or hand it over?

Installing Zabbix is not hard and is well documented. The time goes into thresholds, device templates and responding to alerts week after week. If your team has time for that, we can do the deployment and handover only.

How is this different from free uptime monitoring?

Free uptime monitoring only checks from the outside whether your site or server answers. This service watches the internal state of servers and network gear, and someone is responsible for acting on the alerts.

Is Zabbix installed on our own infrastructure?

Yes. The monitoring server runs inside your network or on a VPS that you own. The data stays with you and you get full admin access.

We already use PRTG. Do we need to switch?

No. If you have a valid PRTG license and it works, we tune and manage it as it is. We only suggest a change when licensing limits or a specific requirement call for it.
