What is Linux Server Management?

Linux server management is the ongoing configuration, updating, securing and troubleshooting of Linux servers, with every change documented. It suits anyone who just received a fresh VPS with nobody to configure it, sees occasional 502 errors without knowing why, or cannot say when the server was last updated. On Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux, PikoSystem creates a sudo user with SSH key login, sets up Nginx or Apache with PHP-FPM and auto-renewing Let's Encrypt certificates, configures UFW or nftables with Fail2ban, schedules daily restic or Borg backups to a destination outside the server, and installs security patches in an agreed window. Linux Server Management: a practical guide

Ubuntu, Debian or AlmaLinux: which distribution for a VPS?

The deciding factor is usually the length of security support and the software you plan to run. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS receives standard updates until 2029 and ships newer packages such as PHP 8.3 in its official repositories. Debian 12 moves more slowly, which suits servers expected to run for years without major changes. AlmaLinux 9 is RHEL-compatible, is supported until 2032, and is the more natural base if cPanel or CloudLinux may be added later.

If your server still runs CentOS 7, it has reached end of life, and Ubuntu 18.04 is past its standard support. An in-place upgrade across major versions is rarely the safe option. Building a fresh server on a current release and moving services over carries less risk.

Common Linux server configuration mistakes

A few mistakes come up again and again when we review servers: MySQL listening on 0.0.0.0 with port 3306 open to the internet, site folders set to 777, or a Node.js app running as root. Any one of these can turn a single compromised site into full control of the server.

Another group causes slowdowns and unexplained outages. On a server with no swap, the OOM killer stops MySQL when memory runs out. Missing logrotate rules or no size limit on journald slowly fill the disk until the database can no longer write.

What to prepare before handing over server management

Access to your VPS provider's control panel matters more than it seems. That is where snapshots are taken and where the VNC console lives, which is the only way back in if an SSH change goes wrong. Also gather the list of domains, sites and services on the server, plus access to your DNS management.

If you are not sure who has had access to the server over the years, tell us. At the start we review the keys in authorized_keys and the system users, and rotate old passwords.

What affects the cost of VPS management?

Server count is only part of it. A server running one WordPress site on Nginx needs far less attention than one running several applications, a message queue, PostgreSQL and Docker containers side by side. A control panel, the volume of data to back up and the need for out-of-hours changes also shape the estimate.

The starting condition matters too. A server that has gone years without updates or documentation needs a cleanup phase first, and monthly management becomes simpler after that.

Linux Server Management: frequently asked questions

What is a managed Linux VPS?

It is a server you rent from any hosting provider, with a technical team looking after updates, security, backups and fixes. We provide that management on the server you already have, so there is no need to move it.

Do you need the root password?

We need administrative access to start. We recommend creating a separate sudo user with an SSH key for us, so our access is traceable and you can revoke it at any time.

What do you do if the server slows down or goes offline?

We start with logs, CPU and memory usage and disk health to find the cause. If it is urgent, we bring the service back first and fix the underlying cause after. For outages, see our emergency services as well.

Is this a one-time setup or ongoing support?

Both are available. A one-time setup ends with the documentation handover. Monthly management covers updates, backup checks and issue handling, under terms set in the contract.
